2018 | Year in Review

Well it's the last day of 2018, so time to look back on the year! I quite like doing these annual reviews, just to pause and take stock of what's been going on in my life, and see if I've maybe achieved anything this year! Compared to the last few years, this one has been slightly less eventful, as there was far less travelling and far less moving than there has been. That could make it a slightly more boring year, but a fair amount has still happened!

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas, or Happy Holidays if you celebrate something else! The festive season has come and gone so quickly - although some of you lucky people might still be off work until after the New Year now? Not me!

Outfit - Into the Open Air

For my final Disneybound outfit, I've chosen a fancy, festive look, in line with my other winter December outfits. This is my second time inspired by Merida from 'Brave', but this teal dress was too perfect for her to not use! It's a fun, party dress that I most often end up wearing at this time of year, and the bronze details are similar to embellishments on her dress too. The black leather jacket was to bring in her tough, warrior spirit, and I considered brown boots but decided the black was a bit smarter for a dressy look. The necklace was chosen because it's a little like some Celtic knot work designs, as is the ring - the Celts were the early inhabitant of Scotland, and my most recent tattoo has another Celtic design worked into it. I chose some sparkly makeup, and kept my hair all natural, as Merida does with her wild mane.

2018: Best Of

Well, 2018 is nearly over, so it's time for my annual review type posts! I'll be looking back at all the things I've done this year next week, after Christmas. For now though, I'm picking my 'bests' from this year, from the media I consume, to the places I've been and things I've done this year. I'm using most of the same categories as previous years, though there is one I've switched out. Anyways, these are my choices - let me know what your favourites are!

Instagram Tag

I haven't done a tag post in so long! I've been pretty busy this week in the run up to Christmas though, so this was a nice, quick option for a post. Instagram is probably my most used social media account. I have plenty of others (linked in the sidebar there), but it varies how active I am on those, whereas Instagram I keep up with regularly. I think it's partly because you aren't flooded with people posting all the time (Twitter) or sharing content that isn't always relevant or what I'm interested in (Facebook), but I can still use it to keep up with people's lives. I'm also quite a visual person, so photos appeal to me a lot, and my feed is curated to what I want to see regularly. Anyways, I found this set of tag questions online, so here we go!

Outfit - Aren't You a Little Short For a Stormtrooper?

Sticking with my winter themed Disneybound outfits for December with this snowy white look, inspired by Princess Leia / General Organa, from the 'Star Wars' franchise. This look was mostly based on the white dress we see her in during the first film, mine is just a bit shorter! I chose the grey cardigan to mimic the loose, floaty design of hers. I paired these light colours with black tights and these chunky biker boots, partly because they're practical for Scotland in winter! But also because I didn't want a look that was too delicate and feminine, I wanted to bring in a bit of her tough, warrior personality. I chose silver jewellery to match the white, and the starry earrings in particular were a nod to the space setting of the saga! I kept my makeup natural, as hers normally is, and finally, my hair isn't really thick enough for those braided buns she wears, but I did put in these double buns to get as close as I could!

Top Five Edinburgh Hidden Gems

Edinburgh has so many attractions and locations to visit - for a small city, it's pretty jam packed! Most tourists and visitors will head straight for the Royal Mile and the rest of the Old Town, and while these are excellent historic areas to explore, the crowds can get pretty tiring. If you want to get away from the beaten track and the most touristic parts of the city, here are some suggestions (in no particular order) for the best hidden gems around the city, which are less well-known among visitors!

Eco Friendly Gift Ideas

Ripping into your presents on Christmas morning is so much fun, right? Especially as children, eyes gleaming in wonder at what each gift could contain, hands unable to move fast enough as the excited bursts over. It's a wonderful thing to experience and to watch.

But what happens afterwards? What happens to all that paper and ribbon and tape? How many of those gifts come with layer upon layer of plastic packaging? And how many of them will be used or played with for a time, before also being thrown away? Christmas is magical, of course, but we should also try to be conscious of the effect it has on our planet. The natural world is suffering from our casually wasteful habits. So how can we do better? Here's a list of suggestions for sustainable, reusable, and environmentally friendly gifts! Also, I haven't included links, because it's better to try to shop local when possible, or only get deliveries from within your country if ordering online, to minimise your carbon footprint!

Outfit - For The First Time In Forever

For December, I've decided to try and make my Disneybound outfits quite festive and winter themed (and these short winter days in Scotland have resulted in some dodgy lighting this week, sorry!). So with that in mind, my first outfit comes from the film 'Frozen', inspired by Anna. She wears a couple of outfits during the film, but this is the black and blue dress, with pink cape, that she wears most often. I chose the black t-shirt and blue skirt to match the colour palette, and the skirt has glittery threads which feel quite festive. The cardigan is less winter appropriate, but the right colour, and is fine to wear indoors if the heating is on! I recently got these boots refurbished, and they're practical for the winter months. I chose the leaf patterned necklace and ring, as she has flower and leaf detailing on her dress. The blue earrings were to echo the cool colours of winter, and the pink lipstick was to bring out her energetic, vibrant personality. Finally, of course I had to plait my hair!

Holyrood Palace | Edinburgh

Holyrood Palace is one those places in Edinburgh that all the locals know about, but half of us rarely ever visit it. I've been once before, back when I worked for a summer school, but I was watching the kids more than actually taking in the palace. And of course, I went to the Queen's Garden Party earlier this year, but you don't actually go inside the palace for that. A friend got some free tickets last weekend though - Historic Scotland gives away a bunch every year to several attractions around the country for St Andrew's Day (the patron saint of Scotland) if you register online - so of course, I took her up on the chance to go again.
