Musically Inspired - A Different Sort of Life

Why does everyone's life have to look the same? Why are we all expected to get stable careers and buy houses? Why do we have to get married and have kids? Why do have to fall into the same routine as everyone around us, and every generation before us?

Outfit - You Can Fly

It's pretty obvious which character I chose this week, right? Of course, this is a look inspired by Tinkerbell, the mischievous little fairy from Peter Pan. Honestly, I wasn't always a big fan of Tink, with the way she acts so bratty at times, but this dress was too perfect not to use for her. Spring also finally arrived here in Edinburgh at the weekend, getting me inspired with my spring/summer wardrobe (though it's definitely still too cold to wear this outfit without tights and a thick jacket!). I added the cardigan, partly just to add some interest, but also to suggest her wings and fairy dust trailing behind. The nude flats are perfect for her, and I chose jewellery with nature interwoven, with my tree of life necklace, and a leaf ring. The earrings and headband were to add more green to the look, and of course, I had to try for a ballet bun to really capture her style, though it's not a hairstyle I particularly like on myself, I made an exception. I also stuck to simple makeup, to go with the natural, carefree look, but with a pop of pink lipstick for her pout.

A-Z of Scotland

I've previously written an A-Z post about Edinburgh, as well as a few other places I've lived, but I thought I'd widen my reach and write one about my home country of Scotland as a whole. Edinburgh has a lot to see and do, but there's even more of the country to explore beyond the capital. And as well as locations and sights to see, this list also includes aspects of culture, and historical figures - in short, all things Scottish are included here! So, let's jump right into it...

Top 5 Superhero Movies

You'd have to be living under a rock to not have noticed the abundance of superhero films that have been released over the last ten years now. These were largely the creation of Marvel Studios, but other companies have joined in on the resurgence, resulting in a massive collection to choose from. I've seen quite a lot of these, though I'm not a comic book reader, so my knowledge of most of these characters is limited to the films, augmented by internet articles. I will confess, that I feel I'm reaching my saturation point for them though, and it gets harder for each new release to really capture my attention, and not be "just another superhero film". So, to weed out my favourites from the crowd, here are my top five from the last few years, in no particular order.

Outfit - Heigh Ho!

I'm feeling a little Grumpy today... yes, for this week's look I've put together an outfit inspired by Grumpy, from 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs'. The main reason I chose Grumpy was because his was the closest colour palette to items in my wardrobe, and so the easiest to put together. I started with the red beanie (my only other one is black), and this deep red top, which I added a belt to, to create a tunic sort of style, like the dwarfs wear. I don't have brown trousers, so I chose these skinny black jeans instead, with brown boots, so I still had some of that colour present, plus the chunky style seemed appropriate for the tough mining work they do! My makeup is pretty natural, but I did use brown eyeshadow to match the colour scheme. The jewellery was also inspired by the dwarfs' mining work, as I thought the small silver discs and the piece of quartz would be things they would potentially dig out of a mountain side! And of course, I had to pull a few grumpy faces while taking these photos!

To Spring

Spring is a time of renewal. A time of rebirth, of reincarnation. It is the season of change and fresh starts. A season when life springs back into the world, and joy and energy burst forth in ourselves. We spring clean for a reason; to start over, to refresh ourselves, and prepare for new beginnings.

Another Year Older | 24

Last week I turned 24, and I now definitely have to say I'm in my mid-twenties, and I'm definitely considered an adult by the rest of the world. I mean, I've been an 'adult' for several years now, but there's a certain amount of leeway given to folks in their early twenties; the older you get, the more people expect you to have your shit figured out. I'm still working on that one.

Outfit - Poor Unfortunate Souls

Turning to a more villainous character for my inspiration this week, with this look being based on Ursula, from 'The Little Mermaid'. The villains may actually prove to be easier to style for me, since I typically wear darker colours more similar to their palettes. Ursula is a prime example, with her purple skin and black tentacles, which I've used a purple top and black leggings to mimic. I liked the leather look of the leggings to echo her slippery, scaly tentacles, but I also mixed and matched by experimenting with the skirt on top for a floaty, underwater effect. I didn't have a necklace quite like her seashell, but I thought this moonstone heart was the right colour, and the heart shape could be appropriate since she tries to capture Prince Eric's heart. The earrings are big and bold, which seemed like the right style for her, and I tried to get some volume in my hair to mimic hers (I suck at doing hair by the way). And of course, I had to finish it with some shimmery purple eyeshadow, and a bold red lip.

Great Historic Scottish Women | International Women's Day

(source)
In celebration of today being International Women's Day, I'm sharing some of the greatest women from throughout Scottish history. I learned a lot while researching this post, as much of my knowledge of history prior to this (as a result of my current job, in a tour company) seemed to involve mainly male figures, including heroes, kings, inventors, thinkers, and more, so it was definitely good to read about some of the important women that have shaped and influenced the country. There are probably many more not on my list, but I've just picked out some of my favourites that I learned about.

Grey | Colour

It's solemn and bleak and austere. It's quiet and moody and sad. It's formal and conservative and neutral.
