Review - Avengers: Age of Ultron

Anyone that knows me, knows that I’m a big fan of all things superhero. I’ve never been a comic person, but I love so many of the new films and TV shows that have been released in the last few years. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is what got me into it all, and has remained my favourite throughout - I especially love that it’s all connected, and get really excited when there’s new links to work out between things. The first The Avengers film was particularly good, so of course, I was dying to see Avengers: Age of Ultron - and my word, it was fantastic.

Outfit - Blue Jeans

I'm feeling summery again for today's outfit, as the weather here has been so nice lately. Jeans are still a pretty practical option though, as it can still be deceptively chilly out! I've been seeing the ripped jean trend a lot lately, but only bought this pair recently - I prefer the smaller rips, rather than having two huge ones on the knees. I love the colour of this top too, it's so bright and vibrant! I stuck with the blue theme by wearing these gold and blue bracelets - lots of jangly ones like these feel like summer to me for some reason, and the feathered headband also has blue beads, and adds a hippie/festival touch. I'm addicted to boots, as some may already know, so ankle ones are great for warmer weather (though I do end up ditching them when it gets really hot!)

The Swellers - Call It A Night Farewell Tour

Two farewell tours within a month of each other - where are all these bands going? This time around we went to see The Swellers on their farewell UK tour. It’s nice when bands choose to do tours like this though, rather than just sort of fading off, or announcing a split then not bothering to do one. It’s a chance for us all to see them one last time and say our goodbyes. I like The Swellers, but I’ve never been a really huge fan, however I have seen them before as a support band (the first time was for The Blackout, funnily enough), and they are my friend Tasha’s absolute favourites. I thought I should go since it was my last opportunity, and she managed to drag a few of us along with her for moral support!

Travel Inspiration - The Scottish Borders

Ok, so this post isn't really about travel for me, as I come from the Scottish Borders. But there's a good chance that most of you who are reading this are not, so I'm taking the opportunity to show off some photos of where I'm from. Most of these were taken at home, on our farm, so of course I'm not suggesting you travel there specifically! But they are fairly typical photos of the whole region. I shared some photos from home a while back, here, but this is the first time I've played around with my new camera, which I think takes much better photos, so I thought I'd share those. The Borders is full of hills, rivers and farming landscapes; a rambler or nature lover's dream!

Outfit - Light Layers

Today's outfit was put together when Scotland got a few days of uncharacteristically warm weather for this time of year, and got me thinking ahead to summer. I like this cardigan/shrug thing (suggestions for what to call it?) because it adds an extra layer to the outfit to make it more interesting, but is still loose and light for in the sunshine. I've mixed together more colours than I normally do, but I think it's something about the sun that just makes me want to dress brighter! The boots are perhaps a little out of place in warm weather, but sometimes I'm guilty of doing something like that for the sake of a good outfit, and I love the boots and skirt combination. I'm also still wearing tights here, as I don't trust Scottish weather, so black tights would be another option. Overall, one of my more scatter-brained outfits, but I still like how it turned out!

Musically Inspired - Ode to Summer

Oh summer, where are you? Now don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of all the seasons. Summer seems to be the one that gets all our attention though. I love the changing colours of autumn, curling up inside while outdoors is covered in snow in winter, and the sense of awakening as flowers blossom in spring. But at this time of year, I start to long for summer.

Review - Halestorm: Into the Wild Life

Album cover artwork for Halestorm - "Into the Wild Life"

First of all, if you ever get the chance to see Halestorm live, do it. I’ve seen a lot of bands who are great live, but they are truly something special. And that’s exactly what they’ve tried to capture on this, their third album, Into The Wild Life. It’s aptly named, as they’ve strived to create something new, breaking down all rules and limitations they (or anyone else) had previously placed on them. It was recording uniquely, with the whole band playing every song from start to finish, rather than breaking each track apart, which really helps to capture the energy and authenticity that  live shows have, and albums often lack.

Outfit - Gig Wear

So in last week's outfit post I said that these might no longer be a weekly occurence. However, due to popular demand - i.e. the insistence of Jason and Bridget - they will be continuing for now. This was my outfit of choice for the Young Guns gig last week. It's been much sunnier and warmer in Edinburgh recently, so I thought I'd crack out some shorts this time - although gigs finish late, and it's still freezing at night, so the tights were a must. I like these black shorts, as they look a little smarter than my denim ones, and the grey and black combination here seemed to suit a rock show well. The t-shirt is super light and easy to move in. And as I've said before, what's a gig outfit without Converse and armfuls of wristbands?

Review - All Time Low: Future Hearts

All Time Low Future Hearts album cover artwork

All Time Low are back again, with their sixth studio album, Future Hearts, being released earlier this week. If you’re looking for something new or experimental from the group, you won’t find it here. It’s the sort of record you expect from All Time Low, staying true to their pop-punk roots, but that isn’t always a bad thing. They proved themselves live after their recent UK co-arena tour, and their Wembley show, and now they’ve produced an album that fans will love, and that may well be their best yet, appeasing critics too. I enjoyed their last two efforts, but not as much as I did their earlier work - but Future Hearts may well be my new favourite, combining all their best qualities in one record.

Young Guns at Electric Circus

I love music. I love going to gigs. I’ve been to lots of gigs. I’ve seen many of my favourite bands. But for years now, Young Guns have my topped my list of bands I haven’t yet seen, but desperately want to. So when they announced their first UK tour in over two years, which included an Edinburgh date (saving me the bus to Glasgow), I had bought my ticket in a matter of seconds.

Outfit - Paint Splatter

I absolutely adore the bright colours in this dress - the grey means it isn't too overwhelming, but the splatter design makes it fun and exciting. I've paired it with black and nude tights in the past, but I went with nude in the hopes of warmer weather soon (though we seem to be struggling to find any here in Scotland!) and they keep the outfit lighter in tone. Most of you will have seen my leather jacket before - my go-to piece to add to a more dressy outfit like this - and my flat shoes, ideal for comfort when I'm out dancing. The jewellery is small and subtle, but I'm really liking the layered necklace trend around at the moment. Normally I like to create outfit combinations for myself, but sometimes it's difficult to pair up any of the necklaces I already have, so this 2-in-1 necklace does the job for me!

Also - a note mainly for any regular readers. I've decided to cut back on my numbers of outfit posts. They'll still be around, but I realised there's more Fashion posts on here than nearly every other topic, and although I like putting my outfits together, many of the other topics on here are more important to me, and I think they're unfairly represented when there's so many outfit posts. So from now on, these will crop up every couple of week, instead of every Monday, much like my other 'series' type posts (e.g. 642 Things, Musings, etc.)

Travel Inspiration - Menorca

For me, the Spanish island of Menorca is home to a lot of childhood memories of building sandcastles and jumping into swimming pools. This was my parents' favourite place to take us on holiday, and I've been to the island a total of seven times. A lot of memories are hazy and blurred together, as you'd expect when I was only a few years old during my early visits. My last visit was in 2011, the summer before I went to university, so those memories are a bit clearer! Menorca is the smallest of the three islands (next door to Ibiza and Majorca), and you can drive across the whole thing in under an hour. It's a lot quieter than its neighbours, more suited to families than the party atmosphere found on the others. These photos all come from my previous two trips there, the only ones I was old enough to have my own camera!

Review - Circa Waves: Young Chasers

Circa Waves Young Chasers signed album cover artwork

Long live the indie rock! Regular readers of this blog shouldn’t be particularly surprised by my choice of album this week - the debut album, Young Chasers, from Circa Waves. In a world of dance/electro/pop/R’n’B music, I seek out the rock bands. But where Circa Waves deviate from my usual fare, is in the way they make me feel nostalgic for the music of 10 years ago. Their debut album feels like what indie rock is all about, reminiscent of bands like The Kooks and The Strokes. It may not be new or ground-breaking, but it’s music that I never realised I missed until now.
